A fleet policy has been arranged by Admiral Marine Limited, the class's Insurance provider, with Lloyd's Underwriters. The Policy is renewed on June 1st annually. The current arrangement is that all SVOD Class members who have paid their subscriptions which includes insurance will have their dinghies covered for a basic Sum Insured of ?4,000. The minimum premium is ?55 but for boats insured in excess of ?5,500 the rate charged is 1% of the value which includes Insurance Premium Tax. If a dinghy is considered to have a market value in excess of ?4,000 it is possible to increase the Sum Insured by writing to the Class Secretary. Periodically the Class will write to members reminding them of the current Sum Insured and asking if the value needs to be reviewed.
CONDITIONS
The Policy is based on the Admiral Dinghy Gold Policy a copy of which can be obtained from the Class Secretary. Third Party Legal Liability is included up to ?2,000,000. Racing and Road Transit Risks are covered. For boats built since 1940 there is a Policy Excess of ?100. Boats built in 1939 and prior carry an increased excess of ?125. In addition Charter is permitted under the Policy. The Cruising Range is the inland and coastal waters of the United Kingdom and any other member country of the European Union for a single period of up to 30 days during the period of insurance stated in the Schedule. The term ?coastal waters? means waters not more than 5 nautical miles off the nearest point of land. Owners who wish to freight, and sail their dinghies in overseas events will need to arrange additional cover.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
For boats ?lent ? or ?chartered ? during Cadet Week the Policy excess increases to ?150. However, if the boat is being sailed by a members immediate family the normal Policy excess would apply.
The following ? unattended warranty ? applies:
? Warranted that when a Sea View Dinghy is left afloat unattended i.e. the owner/owners are away from the Island for more than 48 hours, it is a requirement that either an overall cover is securely fitted or the craft is checked at least every 48 hours by a nominated representative.
If the Insured is unable to comply with the above warranty the dinghy must be brought ashore during these periods.
? It is further noted that losses for loose items of equipment are excluded following a swamping whilst moored off Seaview.
ACTING AS IF UNINSURED
It is a condition of the Policy that the craft should be kept in a ? seaworthy ? condition. It is therefore particularly important that maintenance is carried out regularly paying particular attention to the condition of the rigging as well as the hound and shroud plates. This should help to keep the premium down for the future, by avoiding excessive claims.
CLAIMS
In the event of a loss resulting in a claim being made on the Class's Policy it is necessary to obtain a claims form from Admiral Marine. Michael Warren usually forwards the estimate after the season directly to Admiral who will let you have a copy when the estimate is approved.
It is essential that the claims form which can be downloaded from the Admiral Website is sent off at the earliest opportunity to ensure that the claim is properly logged.
Once a claim has been agreed members will receive a letter to this effect and upon receipt of the final invoice Underwriters will pay the amount of the claim less any excess or deduction to repairers. Any balance owed to the boat builder will then be invoiced to the owner in the usual way.
N.B. The above statements were correct at the time of going to press September 2005. Please check with the Hon. Secretary, or with Admiral Marine Ltd for the current position.
